Competition season is here and you probably have so much going on you can barely sleep. While you’re busy making sure all the costumes are set and choreography is ready, your dance families may (or may not) have any idea what is about to go down.
Although you know just about everything there is to know about how these weekends work, your clientele may not and even seasoned competitors could use some pre-emptive guidance. Here are some reminders to pass along to your students:
It’s not a trophy that counts, but personal growth! If you’ve improved from one year to the next, then it’s a success! Remember to focus on growth. If you’re unhappy with the speed of your growth, you can always add more classes or summer dance programs to help expedite it. The power is in your hands as to how much effort and time you’re willing to put in.
Dancers need to eat before performing. A car will not operate without fuel and neither will performers. You need to fuel your body to perform your best. Dancers without nutrition will not have the strength or energy to rock their routines.
What you put in your body matters. Protein, fruits, and vegetables are great! Protein and granola bars are easily transported or a banana. Whatever you do, stay away from processed sugar until after competing. Sugar crashes are a real thing, and avoiding them in the middle of competition will help everyone perform better.
Envision the weekend prior to getting there. From arrival through awards, there’s a lot that happens and you want to stay focused. Things you can do upon arrival: check hair and makeup, get into your costume, warm-up, run your routines, stay FOCUSED, and try out the stage (if there’s an opportunity to). Once you’re done competing you may want to hang out backstage with friends and/or watch routines from the audience. Check with your dance teacher to see what their preferences are.
Happy competing!
