Good dance etiquette is not just a nicety but a fundamental aspect of a successful and enjoyable dance competition experience. It encompasses a range of behaviors that contribute to the overall atmosphere of respect, professionalism, and sportsmanship on and off the dance floor. Good dance etiquette not only reflects well on individual dancers and studios, but also fosters a sense of camaraderie and mutual respect within the dance community, enhancing the overall experience for everyone involved.
Here are nine dance etiquette guidelines to live by:
- Wait until the routine is finished before entering or exiting the stage. You don’t want to block someone from getting to see their child or student.
2. Competitions do not usually allow photos or videos so enjoy being in the moment and watch your dancer(s) live instead of through a lens. The competition will provide video and photos.
3. Be KIND! Make sure to congratulate your teammates and dancers from other schools. Expressing kindness will help make the event more enjoyable for you and everyone around you!
4. Be respectful! Check in on time so the backstage manager doesn’t have to go looking for you and be polite to the backstage crew. If you are rude, there is a good chance EVERYONE on the staff will hear about it.
5. Be thankful! Say THANK YOU when someone gives you an award. Thank your teachers, parents, and who ever helped make it all happen. Showing appreciation will encourage other people to want to continue supporting you.
6. Throw away your trash in the dressing room. If you leave a mess behind, someone is going to have to clean it up. At EPC, our staff cleans up after each day, so the custodian is not left with an overwhelming amount of work. Be cool and clean up so the staff has a positive image of your dance school.
7. Do not block the wings when backstage. The dancers onstage may have a quick run-around or need to use the wings during their dance. Staying out of the wings is not only polite but can also prevent collisions or injuries if the dancers onstage come running off. Also remember, if you’re in the wings, judges or audience members may be able to see you and you don’t want to be a distraction to the dance onstage.
8. Follow the rules. Going into a school’s venue is like being a guest at someone’s home. Be polite and follow their rules. If they don’t allow food or drink in the auditorium, please be respectful of that.
9. Stay for awards! We know the days can be long, but this is a great time to celebrate with your team and take pictures. Wear your team jackets so you all look professional and unified.
