Competition season is upon us and with that are the inevitable highs and lows. If you want to have a great season, the key is to remember you have the power to set yourself up for success. Take a deep breath and honestly evaluate where you are in your dance journey at this moment. Then implement these steps to help have the right mindset throughout your competition season!
- Set Clear Goals: Define specific, achievable goals for yourself. Having a clear direction can provide motivation and purpose. Make sure these goals are not related to a score or placement – you don’t control those, the judges do. Your goals need to be personal: Have clean turns, pointed feet, better facials, etc.
- Create a Routine: Establishing a daily routine is the best way to reach your goals. Consistency often leads to positive habits and results. If you take small steps every day to work towards your goals, you’ll eventually get there.
- Practice Gratitude: Take a moment to appreciate the positive aspects of your dance journey. Gratitude can shift your mindset and increase overall happiness. If you’re able to keep and gratitude journal that will also help you have a more positive competition experience.
- Learn Something New: Challenge yourself by acquiring new skills or knowledge. This can open up new opportunities and boost your confidence. Conventions are great for this or taking classes in a different style. If you’re able to get to a major city, push yourself to try a class there.
- Have Good Attendance: Dance has numerous benefits for both your physical and mental well-being. It can improve mood, energy levels, and overall health. Missing class not only sets you behind your peers, it also makes you miss out on endorphins.
- Connect with your Dance Family: Build and nurture meaningful relationships with your teammates and teachers. Social connections contribute to a sense of belonging and support.
- Manage Stress: Identify and implement stress-management techniques. This could include mindfulness, meditation, breathing techniques or other relaxation methods.
- Take Small Steps: Break down larger goals into smaller, more manageable steps. This can make change less overwhelming and more achievable.
Remember, change is a gradual process, and small, consistent efforts can lead to significant transformations over time. Also, make sure not to be too hard on yourself. Dance (and life) is a journey. No one is perfect. Let’s strive for growth and becoming the best you!
